The Philadelphia, Pa. papers, 1752-1864, include a volume concerning the Union Reading Circle of Byberry (Phila.), Pa., 1856-1857, with its constitution and by-laws, members' signatures, and newsclippings of verses and anecdotes. The minutes of each meeting include readings from specific works, recitations, book purchases, and the quoting of several rhymes, dialogues, and addresses, such as "Self-Government" and the "Mental Capacity of Man." The collection also contains bills of lading for cargoes shipped to Philadelphia, 1752-1753, deeds concerning a land forfeiture for high treason, 1781, which was sold at auction to Patrick Robertson ( - ) with certain rents to be paid to the University of Pennsylvania, import duties for the Philadelphia district, 1826-1829, petitions concerning the low wages of female workers, especially seamstresses, in 1830, a letter about the Shakespeare Tercentenary Celebration, 1864, and many land deeds (canceled and superceded) primarily concerning James Tuthill ( - ) and Stephen Edward Davis (1819-1856), 1855-1856. Of special note is a collection of papers representing the Greek Fund Committtee of Philadelphia, 1826-1828, which was organized to provide relief to the people of Greece during their War of Independence. Included are cargo lists for the brigs "Levant and "Tontine" (containing mainly food and clothing), bills of lading, donation lists, detailed directions to the supercargoes, account sheets between the committee and treasurer William Meredith (1799-1873), several receipts, and charter agreements with the shipowners.

In 1919 Edward Bushnell was appointed publicity agent for the University of Pennsylvania. His appointment began a long and expanding effort at public relations at the University. In 1954 the Department of Public Relations expanded its work to include two new units, Motion Picture Services and the Office of Radio and Television.
